Craig Stewart, Progressive Conservative candidate in Marquette, says his association will follow Manitoba Hydro’s request to avoid pole posters. He notes at least one rival has already pushed a broad pole card campaign across several Marquette communities.
A Davis district shower in Chumah Hall on Thursday evening September 21 celebrated Miss Darlene Hunsaker of Hamiota ahead of her marriage to Terry Hunter of Kenton. About 102 guests signed the guest book as Debbie Nykoliation played piano selections and Mary Lou Hodge assisted. Gifts included a miniature tractor and hayrack with attendants, and a community gift of a ten piece Ballerina stainless cookware set in Harvest Gold.
The W I met on October 3 with 16 members present. Reports covered social, Agriculture and Industry, and United Nations convenors. Mrs Grey discussed clothing for seniors and lack of suitable items by manufacturers. Two members shared experiences from a United Nations Seminar in Brandon. 75 youths attended, including King Gordon and Chinese embassy officials in Ottawa. Meeting concluded with Mizpah Benediction.
The Birdtail River School Division No. 38 held a regular board meeting October 5, 1972 at 8:00 p.m. with trustees listed. Motions approved include adoption of Sept. 26, 1972 minutes, representatives to the Regional Secondary School Advisory Board, Central Canadian Structures Ltd. proposal for Strathclair School, and various bus route adjustments and staff hires. The meeting adjourned at 11:50 p.m.
The U C W met at Mrs. John Rankin’s home on October 4 with 15 members and 4 visitors. Gert Rankin and Gladys Johnson led devotion on Thanksgiving. The treasurer reported a balance of 433.32 dollars. Business covered Oxford house and Angola bases. Final plans were made for Houck Cosgrove wedding and dance. Meeting adjourned after a committee served lunch.
Oak River WL held October 5 at Memorial Hall with Mrs. W Heapy presiding. Visitor from Cardale heard John Rabkin talk on Health Services and district hospital administration alongside hospital staff. Mrs Stan Henry named Oak River W I representative for Brandon Leadership School on October 25.
The federal government orders a complete ban on firecracker sales to the public. despite the ban, fireworks are expected before the October election ends.
Rev. D J M McCrindle notes World Wide Communion united five parish points in Hamiota Kenton and Shiloh churches. He urges Christians to share wealth but also time and self, citing reasons from scripture and community acts. Teen Centre contacts and weekly meetings in Hamiota and Kenton are listed. Thought for the week: Love is nothing until it is given away.
At the October 5 meeting director Lorne Atkinson outlined Metis Federation programs including housing and cultural efforts. Agnes Grant explained teacher use of Social Studies curriculum supplements to broaden Indian and Metis cultural understanding. The Western Region inspectors presented a Rolling River School Division report from a May to June survey covering structure, finances 1968 to 1972, enrolment and teaching loads. The board awarded Gaiser Builders of Brandon a 23500 contract for Rapid City Elementary addition and agreed to seek permission to sell the Bethany School site for 1.00 plus arrears with transportation costs to be discussed next meeting.
Mrs. Barnes traveled to Tisdale Saskatchewan to visit her aunt for several days. Mrs. Schacht visited her son-in-law and Inter at Beulah. Hospitalized Mrs. Morrice hopes for a speedy recovery while Mrs. Bardwell remains a patient at General. Families and neighbors hosted and toured in Ken-Win, Red Deer and Winnipeg areas. Members of the community attended weddings and visited relatives in Treherne, Rivers and Ottawa.
Stewart a Progressive Conservative candidate in Marquette expresses regret that his proposed debate with Hon Richardson did not occur. Richardson a Liberal cabinet minister visited the riding several times. Stewart notes a public forum is planned for October 16 in Rivers at Rivers Collegiate with all three candidates.
