Share basis dominates prairie tenant farms

The Prairie Provinces rely mainly on share rent for tenant-operated farms while Ontario uses cash rents. The Department of Agriculture notes the regional difference arises because Saskatchewan crops are riskier to grow and tenants are less willing to risk cash rents. It also cites the ease of dividing grain crops and the difficulty of running a mixed farm on a share basis.

Manitoba Sugar Beet Crop Sets Record

Manitoba's 1950 sugar beet crop is estimated at 155,250 tons, a record in 11 years of the industry. The Sept. 14 yield estimate rises to 744 tons per acre with 20,700 acres planted, and conditions could push manufactured sugar to a new high though sugar content may vary. Frost delays risked lower yield and quality, but late Red River district plantings and fair maturity offer optimism. The previous record was 128,800 tons from 14,180 acres in 1942 yielding 26,860,800 pounds of sugar.
