Hamiota reports strong turnout and community support at its first recycling depot. Residents cleaned and sorted plastics bottles, aluminum cans, glass jars, liquor bottles, newsprint and metals, with Cubs and Scouts praised for past bottle drives. Next depot set for October 21 from 1 to 4 pm at the blue Feed-Bite shed across from the cenotaph.
In Hamiota the Shuffleboard Club and Carpet Ball Club prepare their new seasons with social play for residents aged 55 and up. Shuffleboard begins on the first Monday, Carpet Ball on the first Friday in November, with lunch served all afternoon. Annual meetings start October 17 at 10:00 a.m. in the Community Hall. inquiries and transportation help are available at 764-2044.
Manitoba amendments to the District Health and Social Services Act enable board members in 36 health districts to serve up to nine consecutive years, replacing an earlier six year limit. Health Minister Donald W. Orchard announced the measure to ensure stable, experienced provincial health care board leadership.
On Monday October 16 1989 the Rossburn Advisory Committee hosts a Bear Pit Session where residents can ask about the siting of a hazardous waste facility. Panelists include Rick Cooke Ken Caldwell Dr Barry Webster Brian Pannell and representatives from FACTS and Concerned Citizens of Rossburn.
A medical advisor from the Manitoba Lung Association urges yearly influenza vaccination as the best defense against flu. Dr H Benning says the shot prevents 70 to 90 percent of infections and is especially vital for high risk groups such as the elderly with lung heart or kidney disease and those with chronic conditions like diabetes. Most recipients experience no side effects and the association offers more information on influenza and respiratory illnesses.
Residents are unsure which land areas The Echo map highlights as most valuable. Dark brown zones hold heavy soils near the surface, while orange zones also matter but with deeper soil. Mary Lowe invites visits to the Hamiota Library to view an enlarged map and to contact her or the Community Advisory Committee if land should be considered.

Catherine McBain Anderson, born October 2 1889 in the Falkland Islands, lived in Scotland before marrying William Anderson in 1912. The couple farmed near Shiloh Church for 42 years, raised five children, and later moved to Harding and Winnipeg where she resides at West Park Manor with family visiting for her centennial.
