Liberation of Hong Kong Ends Japanese Rule
The Liberation of Hong Kong and its restoration to Britain add a new chapter to its history as a key Far East commercial center and naval base. Britain and the Allies faced several defeats in 1941, but Canadian troops defended Hong Kong and two Canadians, Captain Wallace Creery and Brigadier O. M. Kay, helped sign the surrender. The Canadian cruiser Ontario and the anti-aircraft cruiser Prince Robert fired 21-gun salutes in the harbor to mark the end of Japanese rule.
