Aid urged to aid prairie producers in GATT talks
Ottawa urged to keep doors open to emergency aid as Prairie producers face record low world grain prices. Alex Graham of Prairie Pools Inc warned that at least 1.1 billion dollars is needed immediately to bolster the prairie economy, while Don Knoerr of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture warned that farmers are devastated by the grain war. Talks in Geneva on October 17 loom as governments seek concessions, with France and Japan outlining relief plans and fears rising of further market pressure as Western economies urge greater support for farmers.
