Police Issue Appeal on Fasten Seat Belts in Manitoba

Manitoba RCMP urges drivers and passengers to wear seat belts to prevent ejection in crashes. The notice cites 1978 rural fatalities of 12 died per 113 accidents with 35 ejected, and by mid 1980 there were 76 deaths in 70 crashes with 20 ejected. It stresses belts improve survival chances and urges buckle up.

Telethon '81 Officially Launched in Winnipeg

The Lions Telethon 1981 plans were announced by General Chairman Harley W. Boles. The event runs 9:00 p.m. January 31 to 6:00 p.m. February 1 at Centennial Concert Hall Winnipeg with a theme tied to the International Year of the Disabled. The project includes regional showcases across seven Manitoba regions in 1982 and new producer host Blake Emmons.

Small Business Week proclaimed across Manitoba and Canada

Manitoba and several cities issued proclamations recognizing Small Business Week Oct 6 to 10. The Federal Business Development Bank and various agencies host free information sessions in Manitoba and across Canada to aid small firms with financing, counselling, and management training. Ray Wheeler notes small firms under 20 employees created 97 percent of new jobs in 1977 and employ 2.5 million Canadians.

United Grain Growers expands stake in oilseed plant

United Grain Growers announced the purchase of 175,000 common shares of United Oilseed Products Limited, a rapeseed crushing plant in Lloydminster Alberta, giving UGG a half interest. President Mac Runciman described the move as part of a prairie processing expansion following earlier investments in United Feeds Limited. The plant is among western Canada’s most modern and posted net earnings of $8.7 million after taxes and preferred dividends in the last two fiscal years.

New Outlet for Flax Straw Near Oakner

Kimberly Clark of Canada Ltd plans a flax straw stacking yard on Ernie McLelland farm 1 mile east of Oakner, operating around October 15. A five person local crew and local buyer Tony Hrabek will start, with a mill after 1–3 years once 16 stacks of 280 tons are gathered within about 40 miles. The project follows Chamber of Commerce efforts in Hamiota, Oak River and district.

Appeal Set for Nov 18 in NFU Class Action against Railways

A federal Appeal Court hearing is ordered for November 18 at 10 30 a m in Saskatoon on the National Farmers Union bid to launch a 690 million class action against CP Rail and CN Railway Co The case follows a February Federal Court decision upheld by Justice Hugh Gibson dismissing the NFU motion for lack of jurisdiction and improper class action status The original claim was filed May 11 1979 in Toronto by NFA legal counsel Aubrey Golden The Wheat Board defendant without liability urged Toronto hearing. CP and CN urged Toronto venue. NFU welcomed Toronto court ruling in September 17 hearing

Wheat Board Extends 1979 80 Quota Deadline

The Canadian Wheat Board will allow delivery of 1979 80 quota extensions beyond the original deadline of Friday September 26. The new deadline is December 31 1980. Extensions were granted to producers unable to deliver quotas by July 31 due to space shortages at local elevators.
