Lifesaving Awards Given by Manitoba Lt Gov at Government House
The Royal Canadian Humane Association honored twenty Manitoba residents and visitors at a September 30 ceremony. Top Bronze Medalists included Shauna Kowalchuk for saving her father from drowning near Ashern on August 3, 1980, and George R. Smith for rescuing a Hydro employee from a burning vehicle near Selkirk on May 15, 1980. Recipients of Honorary Testimonial and Recognition of Merit awards were cited for lifesaving actions across Manitoba and neighboring North Dakota, involving rescues at lakes, rivers, fires, and a pool incident, with several involving children and bystanders.
