Premier Gary Filmon heads a Manitoba delegation including Glen Findlay and Jim Ernst to press for ending grain export subsidies at the Uruguay Round talks in Geneva. He cites record low prices and a 40 percent drop in farm income as proof of the need for a level playing field for western Canadian agriculture. The four western premiers previously coordinated protests in Portage la Prairie and Lloydminster and Saskatchewan will also attend Geneva. The talks lead to Brussels in December and are described as the era’s most critical issue for agriculture.
