Complex Fund Raising Mystery Dinner Theatre in Hamiota

A first of its kind fund raiser in Hamiota attracts a full house for a November 19 event featuring Late Deposit by Rivdon Productions Brandon. Sponsored by the Hamiota and District Sports Complex Inc committee, the evening drew attendees from Shoal Lake Strathclair Kenton Rivers Miniota and Birtle with volunteer staff and local businesses contributing to the success.

Oak River Rink Complex Social a Huge Success

On November 5, 1988 the New Oak River Memorial Rink held its first social. About 300 attendees danced to Dr. Rhythm and prizes were awarded by M D Dick Heapy. Community leaders praised funding from M L Gilleshammer who announced grants totaling 68 126.00 and 22 500. The event raised a profit of 2903 74 with many volunteers receiving thanks.

Liquor Regulation Restricts Stomach Bitters to Pharmacies

Winnipeg attorney general Jim McCrae announced that the Liquor Control Commission has passed a regulation restricting sale of stomach bitters to pharmacies only. The change, effective December 1 1988, requires sales behind the counter under pharmacist supervision to curb abuse.

Bake Bingo and Dance shines for Hamiota 4-H Club

The Hamiota 4-H Club held a Bake Bingo and Dance on Friday November 25 with fifteen winners listed: Art Oakden Kelly Cochrane Flora Nicholls Bryan Houck Pearl Kidd Bill Thompson Mavis Smith Darcy Oakden Gerry Wilson Gertie Miller Charlene Mathison Allan Knight Mabel Anderson Dorothy Campbell. Melissa Graham won the blackout and Gladys Johnson won the Smartie contest. Special thanks to Bill Thompson for the Bingo machine Jim Anderson for calling and Jim Routledge for the donation. The club also thanks Darcy Campbell and Chris Brown for music and all supporters.

Women's Institute holds annual meeting at members' homes

ARROW RIVER The Women's Institute met November 9 at Edna Lelond's home with twelve members. They canceled the Christmas supper and concert, set a December 14 Christmas meeting at Pat Lelond's home, and welcomed new members. Officers and volunteers were announced with reports given by Kay Lelond, Edna Lelond, and Trudy Watters.

Entrance scholarships awarded at University of Manitoba

In a late October ceremony the University of Manitoba handed out 392 entrance scholarships totaling 181 500 to graduates from Manitoba and northwestern Ontario who enrolled as first year students in September. The Canada Scholarship added 142 000 in support for science and engineering study. Recipients included Dwayne Malcolm Campbell of Hamiota and Susan Alayne Hopley of Oak River.
