Winnipeg MLA must personally attend a legislative session to receive his indemnity. Attorney-General Gerry Mercier cited Legislative Counsel Tallin confirming the act pays only to attending MLAs. The counsel said attendance means personal appearance and nonattendance means no indemnity.

Seminars for Newly Elected Officials Begin in Gimli

A Winnipeg report says the Municipal Affairs Department will run a series of seminars for newly elected municipal officials from January 25 to February 20 at the Gimli Industrial Park. About 400 officers are expected, with sessions limited to 50 each. Registration is Sundays and Wednesdays at 4 p.m., sessions run 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on weekdays.

The Gift of Sight corneal donation awareness

A Manitoba based eye donation drive explains corneal grafts restoring sight with an 85 percent success rate. The Eye Bank of Canada, formed in 1959 and funded by Lions Clubs, urges donations amid monthly waitlists of 70 to 80 in Manitoba and a shortage of donated corneas.

Manitoba announces new Public Schools and Education Administration Acts

Manitoba adopts revised Public Schools Act and Education Administration Act to take effect December 1 1980. The acts modernize school operation and administration expand special needs provisions and pension requirements for non teaching staff while shifting powers to local boards and retaining ministerial oversight. The changes include ending compulsory attendance at age 16 and three year Winnipeg trustee terms.

Seed Grower Meetings Planned in Brandon December 1980

Manitoba Agriculture will sponsor a December 1 short course for prodation seed growers at the Agricultural Extension Centre in Brandon. The December 2 pedigreed seed growers meeting will cover 1981 seed supply, forage seed market potential, fertilizer placement ideas, and pulse crop prospects. Both start at 9:00 a.m. with a $3 registration fee, open to the public.

New Cut-Your-Own Christmas Tree Site Announced

Manitobans may cut their own Christmas trees at a new site east of Beausejour replacing the Richer area. Access via PTH 4 then Plowed Road with signs on PTH 44. Operating Nov 24 to Dec 24 Mon Thu 8 am 5 pm Fri Sun 8 am 7 pm. Trees 25 cents each up to three per vehicle. Free permits available on site.
