Ottawa clarifies Small Business Development Bond provisions
In the Budget update, the SBDB now covers small corporations and unincorporated businesses in financial difficulty and extends for one year. New preferential tax applies only to interest above 6 percent on loans after November 12, 1981, lowering financing costs to about 13 or 14 percent. Unincorporated farmers can apply via a Farm Credit Corporation loan program with 16 percent interest and a 5 percent two year rebate. Homeowners facing higher mortgage payments may defer interest, add it to principal, or government may cover up to 250 dollars monthly for mortgages with five percent equity or less, only for renewals between Sept 1, 1981 and Nov 12, 1982.
