The Winnipeg Branch of the Canadian Authors' Association announces the Annual Short Story Contest with prizes of 50 and 25 dollars donated by Lady Eaton. Entries must be in English by Manitoba writers with a Canadian background, unpublished, under 4500 words, submitted in duplicate under a pen name, with author details in a sealed return envelope. Hamiota district cattle exhibitors excel at the Toronto Royal Winter Fair with Gordon Killoh taking 12th in a cross bred class and 8th in a three shorthorn steer group while Wilkie Cochran earns 10th in his calf class. Congratulations go to both men.

Fraternal Hall Opens With Community Victory in Hamida
Last Friday night Hamida celebrated the opening of the New Fraternal Hall with a full community turnout. Mayor F J Coombs presided, Dr E D Hudson spoke, and groups including Masons Foresters Rebekahs Eastern Star Orange Lodge Oddfellows and the Legion joined in a group photo. The hall featured a busy fish pond turnout for kids a rummage sale netting nearly one hundred dollars and a four hundred seventy five dollar net from the evening. Roy Kirk George Baxter Detmar Kirk and Fred Rockley provided music for the dances as the project nears completion early in 1991 with finishing touches to lockers and the exterior cover. Bookings are handled by caretaker Orville Murray.

A $44,164.20 contract to Dauphin Fixtures Limited of Dauphin Manitoba will build an RCMP detachment quarters at Wasagaming Manitoba. The low bid from nine responses will yield a six month project on Fox Drive at Fern Street with married staff living quarters and single staff rooms. Plans prepared by the Department of Public Works Winnipeg offices set the interior with gypsum board and tile floors and brick veneer exterior.

Park Winter Works Funded At Riding Mountain
National Resources minister Walter Dinsdale announced 135 men will work to spend 375 100 on winter projects at Riding Mountain National Park. The program, part of a four million dollar federal winter works drive across 16 national and seven historic parks, aims to finish by March 31 1961. Tasks include building services at Wasamang campground 25 miles of fire access roads clearing along the central fire road McKinnon ski hill slope work and portable cabins for fire lookout towers.

Manitoba approves 89 winter works projects for 1960 61
Manitoba Labour Minister J B Carrol announced 89 municipal Winter Works projects approved within 25 days of scheme start. Eighty of the 89 have federal approval. nine await Ottawa. The 89 projects total value exceeds 3 million dollars and will provide work for 1,373 Manitobans with many projects from Winnipeg outside the city core. New work includes right of way clearing, culverts, stockpiling, sidewalks, snow fences, sewers, and watermains.

Mary Frances, 21, from Oshawa Ontario, enters CBC TV Country Hoedown as the new girl vocalist. She has sung professionally since 17 and won talent awards including Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts, appearing with Gordie To, Tommy Hunter, Tommy Flunter, Tommy Common, the Alamos Sisters and the Singin Swingin Eight.

Manitoba Ice Fishing Opens November First
Manitoba's ice fishing season runs November 1 to March 31 with lakes and rivers open to anglers. Minister C. H. Witney notes the sport is growing and licences cost one dollar for residents and two dollars fifty for non residents. last year 5742 anglers took licences, 4542 residents. Some anglers use wooden frame canvases while others shelter in woolen huts with stoves and radios.

Mrs. Isabel Riddell Laid to Rest in Kenton District
Mrs Isabel Ann Riddell 82 died November 19 at her daughter Mrs John Whyte in Kenton. Born in Wingham Ontario she moved with her parents to Oakner district where she married Jas Riddell in 1902 and lived on the farm until 1942. After his death she moved to Hamiota then Kenton in 1952. Survived by sons Walter and Stewart a daughter Mrs Morton White Winnipeg a sister Miss Tena McDougall Kenton and eleven grandchildren.
