Barley BYD Resistance Advances at Brandon Research Station
Agriculture Canada’s Brandon Research Station reports two new two row malting barley lines carrying the Yd2 BYD resistance gene. These have shown strong agronomic performance and malting quality in Brandon tests and with Winnipeg cooperation. If sustained, a BYD resistant two row variety could reach western Canadian producers in five to ten years, improving yield stability and grain quality amid BYD outbreaks. BYD causes yellowing leaf symptoms and reduced yield, especially when infection occurs early, and is spread by aphids threatening barley across the Prairies.
