The bands second annual concert last Wednesday drew a crowded hall and enthusiastic praise. Wm Ferguson MPP and ex mayor Chambers lauded the band for rapid progress and excellent items and praised other local talents. Proceeds totaled 105 80 dollars.
A major fire gutted Brandon Asylum last Friday evening destroying a provincial building housing about six hundred inmates. Flames, started around five, overwhelmed staff who evacuated all prisoners in eight minutes with no loss of life. Three inmates were unaccounted for. one, Mrs. Harding of Lethbridge, later died of exposure. Inmates housed in the winter fair buildings for fifteen months until a new asylum is ready.
Carson Newton and Welsh were convicted for robbing R. E. Hunter's store and jailed at Stony Mountain. Carson received fifteen years and twenty five lashes, Newton twelve years, Welsh four years. Carson had prior seven year sentence. Newton had an Oregon prison term for similar crimes.
Alderman Stewart presented a 56 dollar check to the hospital board. The donation traces to a coronation event where town lodges pledged proceeds to the hospital, then allocated among lodges as interest accumulated. Stewart, as Maccabees secretary, kept this sum separate. it is the sole donation from this source reaching the board.
Hospital board representatives secured a $250 rural and $125 town grant after presenting yearly patient figures. Officials urged councils to run hospitals by grants, aiming to double next year with hospital aid, ensuring operations for another year.
A reader urges councils to insist on written promises from utilities and to address aging street surfaces. Suggestions include upgrading streetlamp maintenance and adding a Helen street sidewalk while noting the once-proud Ham iota fire brigade. The letter defends school taxes, arguing cuts would force families to seek distant, costly education options.
