Stirling Enterprises continues paving the east side of Hamiota despite winter conditions. An asphalt plant in the industrial park operates long hours to finish the project before winter settles in.
Manitoba plans new legislation to tighten penalties for drinking and driving. A 24 hour licence suspension would apply at BAC between .05 and .08, with stronger financial penalties and mandatory Addictions Foundation assessment after two suspensions in three years. Local groups welcomed tougher measures announced at the TADD conference.
The Birdtail River School Division will offer half credit vocational courses to senior high students with priority for Seniors 4 and 3. Instructors include Harvey Brown at Hamiota Collegiate and Curtis Basso for a small motors course at Decker bus garage. Welding at Shoal Lake will be led by Brent Allen, carpentry at Wil-Kcraft Cabinets in Hamiota, and the Decker Hutterite Colony will provide space and instructors for welding carpentry and small motors for six students plus sewing for nine.
Hamiota residents face a temporary raw water period as the village upgrades its plant with a Nano Filtration unit. Unfiltered chlorinated water will be available during the 6 to 8 week project, with orange laundry if bleach is used. The work starts no earlier than November 4 and ends by January 1, funded partly by the Manitoba Water Services Board and the village.
