Premier Duff Roblin announces staged increases to raise Manitoba's minimum wage from 1.00 to 1.25 by December 1 1968. The plan sets 1.10 this December and 1.15 on April 1 1968 with 1.20 on August 1 and 1.25 by year end.
Mary Elizabeth Perry Venables widow of Evan John Venables died Saturday October 14 1967. Born January 26 1879 in Stouffville Ontario she lived in Stouffville Norfolk Norwich and Hamiota since 1906. Survived by two sons George and Edward Perry and a daughter Jessie with eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Funeral held October 17 at Christ Church Hamiota with Rev. W. D. Smith officiating. Interment in Hamiota cemetery.
Birdtail River School Division No 38 board met at Shoal Lake on October 23 1967 with Trustees Rankin Stimpson Selby Randell and Clark and Superintendent Davison present. Elections results elected O W Lewycky and Russell T Clark to terms ending December 31 1969.
Date set for Friday November 3 at 8 pm in the Elementary Auditorium to honor about fifty Hamiota Collegiate students for 1966-67 scholastic achievement. Over $800 in scholarships bursaries medals and certificates will be awarded by donors including teachers, local businesses, and service clubs.
The Hamiota Explorers reorganize under leadership of Mrs Evelyn Turner Mrs Pay Dale and Mrs Kay Kelly with new officers President Cheryl McMillan Secretary Sally Robinson Treasurer Mersha Strong Press Reporter Sherri Turner. Thirty eight girls enjoyed the initiation and Halloween party.
The Hamiota Hospital District No. 7A Ladies Aid met in the community room on Friday October 27. Mrs. J Ran kin presided as 15 districts attended and brought fruit jam and pickles for the hospital. Funds from rag sales reached $60.50 with a bank balance of $882.79. The Liason Officer reported admissions 51 five new borns 11 major operations 20 minor operations eight bottles of red cross blood used and 6435 pounds of laundry cost $514.80. Candy stripers are high school girls helping nurses in evenings. A nominating committee was set to propose a new slate of officers for next month. The Annual Report will be issued next month. The meeting closed with Mizpah Benediction.
Decker CGIT Girls spent an afternoon gathering UNICEF funds last Saturday. They canvassed house to house in the district before returning to the church for lunch. Special thanks go to drivers Mrs. F Rosenberger Mr Lints Mr Russell Sunley and Mr R Brooks for their help.
The University of Manitoba Extension Department lists educators invited to Birtle for the Family Life Workshop sponsored by the Home and School Association. Speakers include Prof Nancy Barclay Family Living, E MacKinnon Sociology St Pauls College, Perry Schuman Law Faculty, Therese Chetelaine Social Work Field Inspector. Community groups urged to send representatives to apply learned insights locally.
An October 26 organizational meeting in Ham iota formed a Chamber of Commerce to promote agriculture, commerce, industry and civic welfare. George A. Murray of Brandon spoke on chambers. W A Kelly was elected president with Ivan Donald as VP and A Stevens as secretary. eight on the original board including Len Chapman and Murray Carnegie. If chartered, a second meeting will set fees, meeting dates and review the constitution. Thirty attendees, including two ladies, heard thanks for Murray’s Brandon trip.
Mr. Robert Routledge died suddenly at his home on October 25. Funeral service was held October 28 at McConnell Bros Chapel with Rev. R. E. Clark officiating. Interment followed in Hamiota cemetery. He was born April 23, 1906 in Lenore and married Ida Van Buskirk in 1931. He farmed in Lenore, Hamiota and Oakner before taking over a store in Oakner in 1962. Survived by Ida of Oakner, two sons Lyle and Billy, six daughters Doreen Shura Winnipeg Marion Smyth Hamiota Evelyn Avian Oakner Olive Tunski Rosendale Pearl Van Buiten Victoria Judy Winnipeg, one brother Jack Routledge Hamiota, one sister Mrs. Alex Angus Rivers, and fourteen grandchildren. Pallbearers listed.
On October 19 1967 forty five boys and parents attended a Cub meeting with Rivers Camp District Cub Master who spoke on the merits of scouting and yearly goals. Leaders R Lepine A J Anderson Wayne Rethnie were present. A week later October 26 thirty five boys attended with the same leaders plus Strong and Larry Oak.
