Air Canada Heart of Gold Awards recognize Canadian volunteers
The Heart of Gold Award program, run with 750 newspapers nationwide, has drawn over 1100 nominations in six weeks. Nominations pour in from federal to municipal levels, praising acts of compassion from Saskatoon to St John’s and Halifax to Ontario. Citizens from all walks, including a 22 year old Halifax supervisor who chased a thief, are highlighted as exemplars of selflessness. Nomination period ends July 31 1988.

Opportunities for women in trades and technology
About 100 Grade 12 graduates in Birdtail River School Division this year, roughly half women, pursue higher education or first jobs or homemaking. Programs at Red River Community College and Assiniboine Community College offer women entry paths into trades and technology, including 12 week Pre-Trades for Women, 16 week Pre-Technology for Women, a 52 week course, and 4th Class Power Engineers Training for Women with $10 an hour start. Government funding supports the five month course, open to homemakers re entering the workforce. Contact local colleges or Canada Employment Centre for details.
