Manitoba launches second phase of ALIVE safety drive
In Winnipeg the ALIVE Traffic Safety Campaign advances with a focus on drinking drivers during the May long weekend. Attorney General Roland Penner and Ministers Bucklaschuk and Plohman outline amendments to the Highway Traffic Act and Blood Test Act, expand penalties, back federal code changes, and appoint a ministerial committee chaired by Margaret Taylor to boost enforcement and community action. The program includes a year long multimedia drive “Drinking and Driving The Hangover Can Last a Lifetime,” and support for the ALERT program plus a Breath Alcohol testing vehicle for Winnipeg. The RCMP backs year round random enforcement and Crown Prosecutions tighten charging rules for repeat offenders.
