Hamiota’s Early Telephones 1906 Growth and Legacy
The Hamiota district’s first telephone began with a talking machine and 38 subscribers in 1906. By 1936 the exchange expanded, poles replaced roof lines, and underground cables reduced outages as the system grew to 329 phones, later 419 local and 325 rural lines. The Manitoba government then formed a public utility, Manitoba Telephone System, boosting rural service.
