Hospital Premiums Rise in Manitoba Plan
Manitoba hospital premiums will increase effective January 1 1969. Health minister C H Witney announced May 1 the monthly rate for a single person will rise $1.60 to $3.60 and $3.20 for a family to $7.20, driven by rising hospital costs. In 1959 costs were $27 million and premiums 40 percent. in 1967 costs reached $62 million with premiums at 20 percent. The new rate will cover about 28 percent of costs, with government funding covering the rest. Premiums will be deducted from June payrolls. six month prepayments via municipalities will reflect the new rate in November 1968 bills, though May 31 prepayments remain at the old rate for the July 1 to December 31 period.
