The Manitoba government and International Minerals & Chemical Corporation Canada Ltd signed a memorandum to develop Manitoba’s first potash mine near McAuley, 40 miles from Virden. The $600 million project could employ about 500 directly and 350 indirectly, with 84 million tons of recoverable potash and a target start of core drilling by late 1981.
Energy and Mines Minister Don Craik and IMC chief Richard Lenon sign a Memorandum of Agreement for Manitoba's first potash mine and refinery. The $600 million, 500‑employee project targets the McAuley area 90 miles west of Brandon, operated as Manitoba Potash Company MPC with Manitoba Mineral Resources and IMC-Canada.
Manitobans showed large generosity during February helping the Manitoba Heart Foundation exceed its $818,700 target. Volunteers and contributors are thanked for heart research funding that saves lives. Miniota Arrow River residents donated $621 toward the campaign.

At the April 28 meeting of Sector 3.10 Working Group on Scales in the Retail Food Industry in Vancouver Canadian official Sandy McArthur announced that the government will pay compensation to retailers for unnecessary costs from the December 1979 postponement of retail food scale conversion.
