Dallas Smith Receives Home Welcome After Stanley Cup Win

Dallas Smith star defenceman of the Boston Bruins returns home to Hamiota after winning hockeys Stanley Cup. A motor cavalcade led by RCMP arrives at the agricultural grounds to a welcome from the school band officials and hundreds of residents. Dallas his wife Sharlene and children receive corsages boutonnieres and autographs. He will speak at a sportsmans dinner June 16 at the Hamiota Collegiate Auditorium.

Red Sox Mix Old and New for 1972 Season

Hamiota notes the Red Sox open at home versus Virden on May 24 at 7 p.m. The club blends last year’s players with a new look including new uniforms and a shared pitching machine. Gate admission rises 75c. season tickets cost 5.00 for 10 games. A Fair Day game is excluded from the schedule ending July 17. New players include Bob Young Barry Brooking and Dennis Anderson. About 30 MSBL yearbooks priced 3.50 will be sold at the gate.

Lions Stage Fundraiser Plays at Hamiota Lions Club

Hamiota Lions present two community theatre productions on Wednesday May 25 at 8 00 pm in the Collegiate Auditorium. The shows Alias Smedley Pewtree the Villain of Glitter Gulch and Alaska the Secret of Yonder Mountain feature all Lions members in the cast with about 30 of 50 members expected to perform.

Hospital Bazaar at Hamiota District a Great Success

Staff at Hamiota District Hospital thank supporters for the annual bazaar held May 10 with baking novelties and cash donations. Proceeds totaled 444.38 dollars to buy new chairs for patient wards. Mrs D Volovich of Winnipeg won the hand knit afghan raffle.

Band Held Spring Concert in Hamiota

The Hamiota School Band under Mr. Ted Good and Mr. Ron Houck presented a full spring concert on May 8 with saxophone quartets solos by Sally Robinson and Holly Johnston, and performances by the Junior Band. The program included "An Irish Rapsody" and added acts by majorettes and two tap groups. Memory pins were given to departing members, and community support for the Calgary trip grew through bake sales, bottle drives, and fundraisers.

UCW May Meeting At Mrs Fleming’s Home Hamiota

The Oakner UCW met at former member Mrs Gladys Fleming’s home in Hamiota with 16 members and 8 visitors. Mrs Wilf Brown and Mrs Walter Riddell led the worship and discussed Robertson House and church involvement as a project.

Sunday School Meeting at McConnell Highlights Plans

The McConnell Sunday School met on May 10 with about 135 in treasury. Graduation and Award Sunday is set for June 18 at 9 am with two graduates and Junior Choir participation. Families may pick up New Curriculum Books by June 10. Clean-up Week runs June 12 to 17. lunch followed.

Driftwood Show at Hamiota Draws Crowd and Prizes

The Agricultural Society hosted a driftwood display by Mr and Mrs A of Neepawa with many items on show. About 250 attendees signed the guest book from Hamiota and nearby towns. Earl Johnson welcomed guests as officials opened the display and tea. Eula Woods won the driftwood centrepiece prize and Dale Newton the ceramic prize.

Convention Held by Birtle District WI in 1972

The District MWI Convention met May 2 at the Birtle Community Hall co hosted by Birtle and Rothesay WIs with convenors Mrs. S Doran and Mrs J Foxton. Roy Brown of Brandon spoke on Preserving our Heritage alongside remarks from Mayor R Howard District President Mrs M White Oak River, Provincial President Mrs E Poole Kemnay and others. The gathering featured memorial service, taped items, a singing program, nursery pageant, ethnic musical heritage, and a display by Newdale WI. There are 26 active locals in Birtle District with 475 members. Mrs M White was re installed as District President.

Ladies Club Meeting in CHUMAH Highlights South Africa Tour

The CHUMAH ladies club met May 12 at 8 p.m. at Marlene Andrew’s home with 19 members and visitors. Janie’s group led worship on “With these hands” and “Praying Hands,” then Bernice Lewis conducted business. Guest Miss Jean Pickard of Brandon spoke on a South Africa journey. Marlene hosted lunch.
