John Dickey announces the Manitoba Society of Senior 55 Games has secured approval to host the 1996 games in Killarney in June. About 1,500 athletes and 1,000 spouses are expected, with strong community support reflected by over 30 letters of endorsement from local groups.
Hamiota hosts three greenhouses Brown's Greenhouse run by Barb Brown began in spring 1984 after selling plants to friends and neighbors Country Greenhouse is run by Eric Belcher and Karen Northam who also own Hi Way Collision They operate with help from their mother who previously ran a greenhouse in Rapid City Chappells Greenhouse owned by Betty and Bill Chappell started after Eleanor McConnell asked them to take over The trio say greenhouses require time and effort and expect business to rise before the long weekend in May, despite slow early season growth.
Bob Caldwell, formerly of Hamiota, is named Coach of the Year in Recreation/Grassroots by the Coaches Association of Manitoba. Since moving to Deloraine in 1975 he has stayed active in baseball and hockey, earned NCCP Level II in both, written a hockey skills book, and praised Hamiota’s coaching heritage and sports spirit.
