Murray Zuk of Souris Manitoba was elected Chairman of the Manitoba Figure Skating Section at the AGM in Brandon on April 30. He succeeds Gerry Howard, who led as Chairman for two years, with new officers including Arnason and Johnstone in key roles and a full board and committees named.

Prairie Women film shown in MINIOTA sparks discussion
About 20 women attended a May 10 showing of the National Film Board documentary Prairie Women. Six interviewees recount farm women’s organizing, equal rights, birth control, co operatives and peace, plus isolation and poverty. Sheila Doig led a post screening discussion noting lack of birth control legality until 1969 and the Meech Lake Accord omitting women’s rights. Arrow River W I sponsored the event.

MSBL to stage development clinics for minor players
Brandon Manitoba The Manitoba Senior Baseball League announces free development clinics for minor baseball players. In partnership with the Westman Baseball Council and the Manitoba Baseball Association the clinics run in multiple MSBL centers May 7 8 in Hamiota Neepawa Binscorth Belmont Riverside Virden and Brandon with Moosomin and McAuley May 29. Local MSBL teams provide players and MBA clinicians lead five hour sessions. Interested players should contact their MSBL team and watch local media for times and age categories.

Water Safety Guide Released by Environment Canada
Environment Canada's weather service released a Water Safety Guide as a public safety initiative to reduce injuries and property damage from storms. It provides precautions for summer and winter events including tornadoes lightning blizzards and high wind chill plus winter power failures and travel. The guide is free and available at local weather offices RCMP detachments parks and public libraries in Brandon and Winnipeg.

Open House Marks Roll ing Dale Training Centre Expansion
Open House at CARDALE Rolling Dale Pre Vocational Training Centre drew a good crowd on May 6 1988. The event showcased a Developmental Program and a Pre Vocational Program including furniture refinishing. A renovated workshop with new Dust Collection and Fume Exhaust systems was unveiled. Grants totaling nearly 22000 supported the 25000 project cost. Marie Carlson presented Community Places plaque to Rolling Dale chair Frank McPhaden. Judy Crop of MCRW spoke on rehab advocacy. Door prize went to Cora Mylrea Oak River and patio set raffle to Sharon Robertson Hamiota. Dainties and lunch were provided by McConnell WJ ladies.

Lyndon Johnston of the Hamiota Figure Skating Club, a Calgary 1988 Olympian, was honored by the Manitoba Section at a banquet after the 20th Annual General Meeting. Ruth McConnell gave a tribute. other notable honorees included Anne Doherty and several club members receiving Bronze and Silver Orders of Sport Excellence.
