Pandas visit Winnipeg Zoo draws crowds and funding
Two giant pandas Rong Rong and Cheng Cheng visit Assiniboine Park Zoo in Winnipeg from May 11 to September 5 1989 in a new exhibit designed for public access. The exhibit features indoor and outdoor levels and a viewing ring while meals include bamboo flown from Georgia and a panda porridge. Authorities note fewer than 800 pandas remain, with Canada and Manitoba funding 50 000 dollars toward conservation and breeding efforts at Chengdu. Public opening May 12 with breakfast events and tickets priced 1.50 for children and 3.00 for adults.
