Hamiota Centennial Plans Advance With Events
The 18th Hamiota Centennial Committee meeting reviewed eight Bed and Breakfast requests. A June 3 golf tournament at Hamiota Golf Club includes a ribbon cutting for new grass greens, with a two ball foursome fee of 2 dollars for members and 4 dollars for nonmembers and a barbecue. Centennial trees arrive May 3 and the May 5 banquet for those 70 and over is set, with scrolls later awarded by the Centennial Queen and Princesses and to Hamiota Schools pupils at year end.

Manitoba and Canada Agree on Waterfowl Damage Prevention Plan
A five year agreement between Canada and Manitoba provides equal cost sharing for a Waterfowl Crop Damage Prevention Program. Environment Canada will contribute up to 1 million annually for 1983 to 1987, funding bait stations lure crops and other measures to reduce crop depreciation from migratory waterfowl. Manitoba projects 1983/84 costs at 190000 with potential up to 450000 in chronic damage years.

The Manitoba Youth Job Centre begins in the Hamiota region with offices in Hamiota and Shoal Lake serving Oakburn Shoal Lake Hamiota Oak River Miniota and Kenton areas. The program replaces Hire-A-Student to boost summer work for unemployed youths and students. Coaches job orders welcome and employers must obtain approval before hiring, with start dates prioritized.

40th Anniversary of Miniota couple celebrated

Hamiota clubs wind up season with competitions and prizes
About eighty seniors competed for the shuffleboard trophy on April 23 1984 as two person teams played two games each under a point system. Jack Coombs and Veda Bray won the club trophy and received individual honors. Carpetball drew fourteen teams on April 27 with high scoring team led by Rena Smith George Cave Ellen Campbell and Verna Reid. The Levona Kerr trophy went to that team with others earning dinner and centennial items. Winter activities wrapped up with shuffleboard carpet ball cards table shuffleboard and crokinole and a pot luck supper drawing the season to a close.
