Manitoba Attorney General proclaimed May 9 through 15 as Police Week to honor local police and urge public support. The Hamiota RCMP detachment will host open houses May 12 and 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. with displays illustrating police work.
Hospital Guild met in Memorial Hall April 26 1971 with 9 members present. They organized a Bake Sale and a $19 raffle. Members urged support for the General Florence Nightingale Tea in Hamiota and to sign up for the Supper meeting of the Hospital Aid in Chumah Hall by June 8.
Industry and Commerce Minister Len Evans discusses a study proposing a provincial bank as a practical and desirable way to boost Manitoba's economy. The report notes large provincial funds are deposited outside Manitoba and calls for real local competition beyond existing chartered banks. The findings will be presented to the legislative committee on economic development when completed.
Hospital notes defend rising charges by highlighting rapid medical progress. New drugs and procedures cut death risk with heart surgery now routine, while hospital costs reflect higher staffing and better equipment. Illness and injury do not wait, and hospitals never close.
Carman residents Mar ge and Fraser Whiteside initiate instrumental band scholarships as their centennial project. Scholarships fund instruction or instruments with adjudicator Mr. Fred Merritt of Winnipeg’s Technical-Vocational High School. Eastern Manitoba bands meet in St Pierre on May 7 and western groups in Souris on May 8. Roblin Deloraine Hamiota and Souris Valley bands compete in Souris. Public invited to enjoy an afternoon of music.

Morrice executive vice president of Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co Limited was elected to the companys Board of Directors at the annual meeting in Toronto on April 30 1971 Gavin W H Kelly chairman announced Morrice succeeds George M Francis who did not seek re election Francis had served as director since 1946 Born in Lonmay Scotland in 1912 Morrice educated in Manitoba and Manitoba University earned B Se dep Diploma in Education and held multiple company roles from engineer to senior vice president He moved to Toronto when the head office relocated from Winnipeg to Toronto He has been noted as past president of the Flin Flon Branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and serves on several industry groups and Manitoba engineering boards.
The Women's Aid to the Hamiota Hospital hosted a district aid meeting aimed at supporting hospital services and community health initiatives in Hamiota. Members discussed fundraising, volunteer help, and local health needs to strengthen care access.
A mixed shower was held Thursday April 28 in Cardale United Church for bride elect Miss Joan Thompson. Corsages were worn by Joan and her mother Mrs Andy Thompson as guests sang and gifts were shown. A dainty lunch followed and about 80 signed the guest book.
More than 50 members from NFU Local 525 journeyed to Winnipeg on April 29 as 95 farm trucks with hogs plus 10 with produce and many cars gathered at the legislative buildings. Over 1000 people delivered a brief on farm economic conditions to the Premier and ministers who offered cautious encouragement. The crowd donated 4 tons of potatoes, 1800 dozen eggs, 175 lb cheese, 112 lb flour and 20 loaves of bread. Women distributed pamphlets to shoppers at 21 large centers. Over 1000 city residents signed a petition for fairer consumer dollar returns, with local donations including hogs, flour, bread, potatoes, eggs and cash.
