The province announces a five percent sales tax to start June 1 with broad coverage and exemptions for essentials. Public information campaigns begin, with 24 000 information envelopes mailed and a toll free line 943 8421 to assist businesses and residents.
A 13 member legislative committee was appointed to examine automobile insurance costs in Manitoba. Treasurer Gurney Evans said the panel would review rate variations and recent rate increases to see if they are justified. The inquiry will be wide ranging to safeguard the public interest and consider a government sponsored program, mid term cancellations, and current methods.
A Friday night audience in a small community attended the Hamiota Centennial Glee Club premiere. The show pleased many, with the directors and accompaniment praised for their efforts and renditions inspiring pride among relatives and friends.
The Docker CGIT group visited the Birtle Indian School on Saturday April 22, guided by the superintendent's wife. They toured the serving, dining, furnace, recreation, washing rooms, chapel, and handy crafts. They viewed barns, livestock, and prize winning art.
The Birdtail River School Division No 38 held a meeting at Shoal Lake at 8 p m on Friday April 21 1967 with Trustees Rankin Stimpson Fulton Selby Rapley Randell and Clark present Also present were Mrs Smith Hepworth and McDonald A 35 member Shoal Lake delegation attended to discuss local school problems The board approved minutes of April 18 1967 received and filed correspondence adopted the minutes and 1967 budget authorized transport for the Drama Club to the Winnipeg festival and adjourned to April 24 1967 A tender was to be called to dispose of the Gamblers School buildings site with sale options separate or together The adjourned meeting date was set for April 28 1967 at 8 00 p m.
The regulations accompanying the new sales tax list items qualifying as tax exempt for children. Included are dresses suits coats blouses sweaters undergarments pajamas combinations snowsuits and other garments sized to fit girls up to 14X or Canada Size 14 or boys up to 18 and similar items for sweaters and footwear with limits on heel height and sizes.
Education minister Hon. George Johnson announced additional grants for 19 school divisions outside the unitary plan. Elementary teachers receive 300 and secondary teachers 400, excluding permit categories. Single-district divisions gain full benefits. multi-district divisions gain grants plus school tax rebates to aid teacher retention.
The Hamiota Collegiate Drama Club led by Mr. Ross Poole staged A Pennant for the Kremlin by David Rogers for three nights to strong attendance and solid financial success. Lead roles included Bob Hirst Sylvia Pollock Raymond Brethour Donna Smith Allan Preston Sharon Henderson and Diane Van Buskirk with a large supporting cast. next show scheduled at Birtle Collegiate on May 10.
The CGIT Centennial Banquet was held on April 29 with mothers and fathers invited. Special guests included Mr. and Mrs. A McColl Mrs. W. Rivers Mrs. R. Teal and others. A UCW served a banquet and toasts were given to mothers fathers church and graduates. Graduation service followed with Karen Cooke Gayleen Stewart Beverly Bailey among the graduates.
The Hospital District No. 7A Ladies Aid met Friday April 28 with 14 districts represented. Minutes adopted. Treasurer reported $78.39 expenses and $1280.51 bank balance. Tea sale plans for May 3 were finalized and nurses received graduation cards. Mrs Ivan Fleming to speak at Shoal Lake regional meeting May 18 on updating hospital equipment.
Nelson Woods elected president and Gord Lyall secretary treasurer at a May meeting in the high school library. A two year president term was decided due to workload. Registration for Midget AB BB and Pee Wee leagues set for Saturday at Hamiota Elementary School 10 to 12. Fees remain 1 2 and 4 per family.
