Energy Corner Air Conditioning the Summer
Central air conditioning has become as popular as window units and is often cheaper for larger homes. Two types exist: split systems with an outdoor compressor connected to an indoor cooling coil, and central package units mounted outside. Prairie farmers face double hit from high rates and dollar
Lorne Hehn, president of United Grain Growers, says Prairie farmers pay more for money as interest costs rise from 13.4 cents to about 20 cents per dollar of gross income since 1988. He notes higher rates harm export value, with Canada’s crop year projected at 23.2 million tonnes and exports worth $4.7 billion, while a weaker loonie could add billions to farmers’ pockets. Hehn urges immediate rate cuts and notes most farm debt sits with a small group of producers.
