Don’t Call Us We’ll Call You on Tax Disclosures

Revenue Canada warns that voluntary tax disclosures must be made before the tax department initiates an investigation. Previous ten year estimates show over 40 million in fines saved if disclosures were made early. If the department begins action, disclosures are no longer voluntary and penalties or prosecution may follow. Even with disclosure the taxpayer owes tax and interest, but may avoid penalties up to 50 percent of the evaded tax. All disclosures are verifiable and incomplete disclosures can lead to penalties or prosecution. Taxpayers should contact the District Taxation Office in person or by mail for undeclared income.
