Manitoba Electrical Output Rises Amid Cold Winter and Drought Relief
Manitoba energy use in February 1978 rose 8.9 percent from February 1977 due to temperatures 20 percent colder. Hydroelectric generation reached 89 percent of output, aided by water conditions and capacity additions at Long Spruce and Jenpeg. Over 12 months, hydraulic generation lagged average due to prior drought, while surplus sales to U S utilities increased revenue amid coal strikes and cold weather. A letter notes potential staff layoffs but unlikely to total 50 across the system, with a copy sent to Manitoba Government Employees Association president W R Jackson.
