Hamiota Ladies Auxiliary Meets in Community Room

The Hamiota Ladies Legion Auxiliary met on March 27 with 15 members. They advanced the colours, sang O Canada, took roll call and adopted minutes, received treasurer’s report, and read thank you notes including one from Deer Lodge hospital. A $25 gift funded the Summer Bus. Petty fund was won by Myrtle Bomford. Meetings will be held the fourth Tuesday each month. A lunch followed.

Manitoba Gazette publication fees rise an average 14 percent starting April 1 announced by Consumer, Corporate and Internal Services Minister Ed McGill. Increases cover tax sale notices Municipal Act from 60 to 70 cents, incorporation and cooperative notices to 12.50, Liquor Control Act notices to 14.50, business names to 5.70, change of personal name to 6.75, and per word charges to 7 cents.

Hamiota Leaders Association Supper and Events Summary

Hamiota Leaders Association held a supper meeting on March 13 in Hamiota. The District bonspiel on February 11 featured 17 rinks, won by Eleanor Thompson. A modelling school is planned for Strathclair March 18 and Miniota April 1, with a ribbon survey to be filled. Mrs. Mary Sclater shared Manitoba Club Council activities and slides from the National Conference in Toronto last November. Experience trip winners include Marilyn Treloar, David Bullock, Tannis Hamilton, and Jocelyn Hayhurst. trip-escort leaders are Heather Smith and Wilma Treloar.

Manitoba Grant Funds Transducer Research at University

Industry minister Bob Banman announced a Manitoba Research Council grant of 4125 dollars to the University of Manitoba for a DC current transducer prototype. The 1976 project led by Tarnawecky, Yunik, and Stuchly has already received an 8450 dollar grant for lab and field testing on a 450 kilovolt line, with patents pursued internationally. The program aims to advance hydroelectric reliability and measurement on high voltage lines.

History Committee Disbands Hamiota

On March 28 the History Committee met with Bud Stupinsky of New Horizons and after a secret ballot decided to disband. The group explains it faced a $20 000 project cost for a proposed Hamiota Heritage. Cal Zacharis from New Horizons said local funds must cover most of it, with grant aid limited to about 7 000 and 2 000 needed before release. Four local groups were asked. one offered 50, another 200 to 500, leaving about 1 500 from elsewhere. The seven senior members felt unable to raise funds and will share all information with any group taking over.

DAUPHIN Dr Vernon Watson announces a 250 dollar annual scholarship in memory of Alex Whyte a Rivers string instrument teacher who dedicated over four decades to music education. Open to Conservatory or university music students at Brandon University with applications due April 11 1978 and auditions May 12 13 18 19 1978.
