Local Co op Holds Annual Meeting at Hamiota School
Hamiota Co op 1958 Ltd held its March 9 annual meeting at Hamiota Elementary School Auditorium with 80 members and 2 visitors. Keith Dixon chaired, minutes reviewed, 39 new members joined in 1970, and $8977 paid out to members over 75 or moved away. The board approved renovating the lumber yard for 13425 to house the new furniture department, which shows strong early sales and margins. New managers Lorne Wihnan and Walter Bonkowski joined the staff, while retiring directors received service pins. Members elected two directors Lloyd Hazlewood and Jack Anderson and Bob Brooks as alternate. FCL reported activities for 1970 and 1971 auditors were appointed. A door prize went to A M Wiltsey.

World Day of Prayer Observed at United Church
The World Day of Prayer was held at the United Church on March 5 with twenty in attendance. Mrs Olga McTavish led the service assisted by Mrs Ethel Fortune Mrs Phyllis Greenaway Mrs Pete McTavish and Mrs Eva McCormick. Mrs Gay Peters provided organ music. Afterward Mrs John McCormick showed slides on The Day that God Gavest. The UCW met with President Mrs Fran Radcliffe presiding and planned a tea and bake sale with guests Mrs Mary Baldwin and Mrs Thompson of McConnell. Hosts were Mesdames E McCormick and Gwen McTavish who served lunch.

4 H Light Horse Club Bonspiel and Winter Fair Plans
The 4 H Light Horse Club of Hamiota took part in the 4 H Bonspiel from March 12 to 14 with 34 rinks from the Wendell Wright area enjoying curling and a Friday Pot Luck supper. Miss Lorna Smith of Brandon spoke on health and activity, urging perseverance. On March 15 Wendy Cochrane chaired a meeting, members agreed to attend the Brandon Winter Fair on April 3, and plan to cover trip costs and meet at the Crop Insurance Office at 11 15. The next meeting is set for April 5 to report on the trip.

4 H Beef Club Holds Seventh Meeting
The McConnell 4 H Beef Club met with nineteen members and three leaders. They reviewed the 4 H Bonspiel details and curling links. Fourteen year olds and over were told of a Virden meeting with six members attending. Members who missed speeches previously delivered them at this gathering. Two demonstrations followed, How to Make and Paint a Sign by Darryl Boyd and Stuart McConnell, and How to Look After Your Call by Susan Wright and Irene Thompson. Jack Boyd led a 4H handbook quiz concluded the meeting. Next meeting set for March 30.

Hamiota varsity girls beat Portage Pats 35 to 25 after a 17-16 halftime. Edie Clark 9, Wenda Houck 6, Barbara Daniel 6 led scoring with contributions from McGheen 4 Reid 4 Brooks 3 Pedlow 1 White 1. Boys win 54-33 over Virden behind 39 by Al McNiven.

Shower Held for Beverley Bailey Bride Elect
A miscellaneous shower for Beverley Bailey, bride elect of March 13, was held in Decker Church lower auditorium. Guests received corsages and gifts displayed in an Experimental Farm barn with Gail Gregory and Sandra Gregory assisting. Beverley thanked attendees and invited all to her trousseau tea at the Gregory home on Sunday afternoon.

Rivers Collegiate Defend Freshman Basketball Titles
The Rivers girls defeated Minnedosa 41 16 to retain the Rolling River freshman crown. Diane Hastings scored 15 and Barbara McFadden 10 as Rivers led 20 8 at halftime with Jo Anne Skeech top scoring for Minnedosa with 5. In the boys game Rivers won 69 40 with Bob Young 10, Brent Montague 15, and Chris Plaseski 14. coach Ray Power saw Mike Bradbury add 14 in a losing effort.

A rink led by P August, A Kirk, W Brooks, and D Kennedy went undefeated to win the Mason Trophy, with J Woods of Bradwardine as runner up after forcing an extra end. In the first event winners were August Ist, Woods Bradwardine 2nd, Bridgeman Oak River 3rd, Dutton Birtle 4th. In the second event winners were L Miller Bradwardine 1st, C Knight Oakner 2nd, M Sabeski Oak River 3rd, A Cumming Oakner 4th. Miller also earned the largest end prize with a 5 ender in the final.

Womens Institute Meeting Details and Activities
The Womens Institute met at Mrs. May Little's home on March 10 with 10 members present. Mrs. R. Foxton presided, the treasurer listed 81.35, and Mrs. Cochran noted wool arrivals for sweaters and afghans. A Basswood resolution was supported, a cat craft was demonstrated, a draw selected winners, and a lunch was served.
Angusville Midget Hockey Tourny crowns St Lazare champs
St Lazare captured the Richard Paul Luba Memorial Trophy by routing Strathclair 17 to 1 in the final of the 3rd Angusville Midget Hockey Tournament held March 5 to 7 at Angusville. Hamiota won the consolation 9 to 1 over Yorkton.
