Manitoba voters will elect the 34th Legislature on Tuesday April 26. At dissolution the NDP held 29 seats, PCs 26, Liberals 1, with one vacancy. Advance polls run April 9 13 16 18 21, and mail ballots available for homebound voters.
The Rolling River School Division Board approved a 1988 budget of 9,828,417 dollars at a March 7 special meeting, up 6.7 percent from 1987. Increases come from pension and insurance costs, payroll, and utilities with capital projects totaling 150,800 dollars across Rivers Collegiate Elton Collegiate Erickson Collegiate Tanner's Crossing School and others. The special levy rises to 2,596,216 dollars, up 2.5 mills from 1987.
Robert Stevenson and Leonard Lepp of Brandon area are named Westman district winners in Canada's Outstanding Young Farmer Program. Nominated by Redfern Farm Services Ltd, they will compete at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair for a regional spot in the national Calgary Stampede event.
A Manitoba lake at 59 46 N 96 24 W was named in honour of F/S C H Finkbeiner. The 1974 approval followed a 1987 ministerial certificate noting his wartime sacrifice. The story recounts Finkbeiner’s hometown Isabella and Hamiota pitching career and his overseas death on May 10 1942.
