Angus breeder Walker named to Canadian Aberdeen Angus executive

Victoria B C Miniota area farmer Larry Walker of Black Meadows Angus Farms was chosen for the executive of the Canadian Aberdeen Angus Association at its Victoria B C meeting. Other new directors include Jim Peaker Ontario Don Atkinson Alberta and John Willmott Saskatchewan. Walker also serves as Executive Director of the Manitoba Angus Association and partners in Landel Export Company negotiating bulls sale to Mexico.

Ice King 85 weekend brings crowds to Miniota events

The Miniota community hosted the Ice King 85 weekend with ten local groups competing in six timed events, a cake decorating contest, an ice show, and a bonspiel. Bob Watters won with 19 points, Ed Wadham and Dan Argue tied for second, and Allan Walker received the Lorne Andrews Trophy. A social, church service, and a smorgasbord topped the festivities.

World Day of Prayer Service at Decker Church

A World Day of Prayer service was held at Decker Church on March 1 with the India prepared program led by Ruth Rockley and Marjorie Brooks introducing the event. Ten members attended the meeting, minutes were read, and reports including hospital funds and ambulance rate changes were reviewed. Planning included an April 14 Smorgasbord committee, a Colleen Little shower, and Red Cross donations with tax receipts.

Gordon Hutchison of Virden Manitoba was made an Honorary President of the Canadian Aberdeen Angus Association at its Annual Meeting in Victoria B C He has a 50 year Avalawn career as a showman breeder and former Manitoba Association Director and President He is succeeded at Avalawn by his son Russ who became a Manitoba Director earlier this year

Pharmacare deductible hike approved for under 65 in Manitoba

Health Minister Larry Desjardins announced the Pharmacare deductible for under 65s rises from 75 to 100 dollars. Manitoba Health Services Commission will cover 80 percent of costs over the deductible with over-65s unchanged at 50 dollars.

Crandall W I hears Dr. Guilfoyle on nuclear awareness

Crandall Women's Institute met March 5 at the Community Centre with 12 members. Dr. John Guilfoyle of Hamiota spoke on nuclear arms, urging petitions and peace actions to prevent nuclear warfare. He noted his role with an international doctors group advocating abolition of the nuclear threat. A discussion followed then fellowship over lunch.
