Calculating Protein Costs For Dairy Feed In Winnipeg
Dairy producers should carefully compute cost per kilogram of protein when choosing supplements. Dr. Phil McKinnon notes that a tonne price divided by protein percentage yields the per kilogram cost, with canola meal at 35 percent protein and $260 per tonne giving about 74 cents per kg, while soy meal at 46.5 percent protein and $400 per tonne yields about 86 cents per kg. A 10 cent per kilo difference equals $100 per ton on a protein-equivalent basis, impacting profitability as research shows canola can match or exceed soy in milk and butterfat output under certain feeding conditions.
