Ottawa Signals Support for Manitoba Hydro Aid Plan

Energy and Mines Minister Wilson Parasiuk welcomed Ottawa’s promise to seriously consider Manitoba’s request for federal help on the 3.5 billion western intertie project. Manitoba would cover 2.8 billion of the cost, with Ottawa urged to provide low interest loans and guarantees while including hydro in the national energy program. The plan also explores railway electrification, Winnipeg transport needs, hydrogen production, and expanded electrical use for Manitoba’s development, noting recent examples of export financing for CANDU and Bombardier subway contracts.
