Red Sox Open with Wins as Rookie Puts On Show
The Hamiota Red Sox opened the 1979 Senior Baseball season with a 4 3 win over Souris and a 13 1 victory against Grandview. Sixteen year old Ross Shindruk saw action at third while Marty Mason and Rick Despaux starred on the mound and at the plate, as Dallas Strachan and Bob Burgoyne contributed early hits. Despaux fanned 10 in relief with a 3 for 5 day at the plate.

The Beaver team defeated Newdale 46 to 1 with 36 hits and 15 walks. Blaine Cochrane and Dennis Nychuk pitched well while Brian Allan and Lindsay Bridge led hitters with five apiece. Owen Genung, Blaine Cochrane, Glen Richardson and Scott Mc Whirter added four hits each.
Minnedosa Falls to Bantams in Bantam Play
Hamiota defeated Minnedosa 13 to 6 as Minnedosa scored once in the first and third, three in the fifth, and one in the sixth. Hamiota’s three first inning runs came on walks and three consecutive hits, with Desiatnyk belting a homer in the first. Desiatnyk pitched four innings with eight strikeouts.

In Beaver section play Maryfield fell 11-4 as Brian Allan pitched the full game for the home club. The 12 and unders defeated Carlyle 15-6 with Robertson starting three and Allan finishing the fourth. Blaine Cochrane led a 12-2 win over Alida in three innings. Hitting leaders were Brian Allan nine, Robertson seven, Nychuk six, Cochrane five, Caldwell four, Richardson three, Mc Whirter and Lall two, Heapy and Cornish one. Bantams, fourteen unders, won 15-1 over Carlyle in four innings with Brent Desiatnyk pitching for Hamiota and Lyall, Henderson, Robertson, Anderson, Desiatnyk and Lee adding two hits each. Douglas Hawkins threw three innings as Sinclair shut out the opposition. Thompson, Shin druk, Campbell and Coupe had one hit apiece.
