Manitoba's health and safety in the workplace program reaches 3 826 students in 48 schools this year with lectures slides and demonstrations on hazard recognition tool safety first aid and provincial laws. The training aims to prepare youth from junior high to community colleges for safe work practice and emergency situations.
In a Winnipeg program at R B Russell School an instructor trains students on safe muffler replacement. Mrs Jean Boughton, new Manitoba Workplace Safety officer, attends with student David Friesen from Anola, as staff from safety and health roles join sessions. The effort aims to cut workplace injuries, with 43 percent of injuries being lost time.
Finance Minister Don Craik introduces a bill to amend The Manitoba Hydro Act and The Public Utilities Board Act. The Public Utilities Board would review proposed rate increases on Hydro with final control remaining with the provincial government. The bill extends the right to seek board review to individuals and corporations affected by rate hikes.
Tourism and Cultural Affairs Minister Norma Price announced a new audio books service for rural Manitoba libraries. More than 600 cassettes will be available across 30 rural library systems for visually or physically disabled patrons and others with learning disabilities.
