Manitoba Readies Tougher Drinking and Driving Penalties

Justice Minister Vic Toews and Highway Minister Glen Findlay unveiled proposed legislation in Manitoba to raise penalties for drinking and driving. A .05 BAC would trigger a 24 hour licence suspension and a $40 reinstatement fee, with vehicle impoundment for repeat suspenders. Additional measures include impaired driver assessments after multiple suspensions, compulsory treatment programs, and higher impound and appeal fees. Manitoba cites declines in impaired driving incidents since 1989 and notes the province’s stance aligns with national toughening efforts.
