Hamiota 4-H Rally Highlights District Event 1978

The Hamiota Shoal Lake 1978 4-H rally at the Fair Grounds on May 27 drew 270 members 68 leaders and 338 attendees from 11 Home Ec and 8 Agricultural Clubs. Judges announced winners in parade education displays and livestock events while many clubs earned trophies and plaques.

Ladies Auxiliary Meet HAMIOTA

The Women's Auxiliary to the Hamiota Health Centre met May 26 in the board room with thirteen districts represented. Treasurer Grace Anderson reported bake sale receipts of 246.05 and 174.58 from tea sales, leaving a balance of 3 406.88. A motion to share mixer costs, 36 insulated cups, and 1000 lids was approved pending board funds.

Ten years since dialing era in Hamiota

On June 2 1978 twelve former MTS employees and families gathered at Joan and Delmar Kirk home for a 10th Anniversary Storg. About 35 people attended with good food and reminiscences of the May 28 1968 dial telephone cut over in Hamiota and district.

Sheila McMillan Wins Dual Medals at Spring Convocation

At Brandon University Spring Convocation on Saturday May 27 in the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium Sheila McMillan of Hamiota received two medals. She earned the gold medal for top standing in the final two years of the Bachelor of Teaching program and the silver medal for outstanding achievement in general education. The people of Hamiota celebrate her teaching career.

Winnipeg Environment Act changes proposed in legislature

Manitoba Mines Resources and Environmental minister introduces amendments to the Clean Environment Act to allow recovery of emergency investigation and restoration costs from polluters and to curb pollution faster. The bill empowers ministerial 21 day orders to shut down operations and creates court appeals for those affected. It also aligns regulations with commission orders ensuring standards stay consistent with new regulations.

Shoal Lake School Renovation Approved for Fall Start

Crandall Manitoba minister approves preliminary plans for Shoal Lake School addition and renovation with Foundation Program support up to 652,839. New construction totals 6550 square feet for instruction and 4800 for a gymnasium. Renovations convert the gym into a material resource centre and admin area. Tenders expected late summer.
