Ladies Club Meet at Vicki Smith Home

The May meeting of the Ladies Club was held at the home of Vicki Smith on May 17 with eighteen members present. Roll call featured perennials, devotional led by Marlene Andrew, business by Janie Lewis, and reports from the treasurer and hospital aid. A tea for Mrs. Ferris’s 86th birthday was planned for June 26 at Laura and Matt McLean’s, after Peggy Smith shared the Blue Willow pattern tale. lunch followed.

Liberia mission talk highlights local outreach

Rev Jesse Lynn spoke at the Pentecostal Church on May 17 sharing eight years of Liberia mission work. He described language diversity, travel challenges, tropical diseases, and Bible college efforts to educate locals. The Wakefield audience praised PACC Wing the Word funding for mission transport and urged continued commitment to God’s call.

Optometrists and Chiropractors See Health Plan Fee Hikes

Manitoba announces a 6.88 percent increase in optometrist and chiropractor fees under the provincial health insurance plan effective April 1. Optometrist eye exam total is 14.43 dollars with sitent exams at 8.07. Chiropractors’ first visit 8.68 and subsequent visits 5.93, with annual maximums rising to 70 for one, 140 for two to three, and 210 for four or more. Estimated costs: 11,000 and 180,000 dollars respectively for 1978-79. Changes follow talks with the Health Services Commission and professional associations.

Maxine Hutchings Feted In Oak River Bridal Shower

Maxine Hutchings was honored at a bridal shower on April 29 in Oak River. The event featured April Showers decor, corsages for the bride and mothers, a wheelbarrow gift presentation, choir singing, and remarks thanking guests. Maxine plans to wed Noble Gordon of Brandon on May 5.

Beavers Take League Opener In Central Division Tilt

Hamiota Beavers defeated Birtle Beavers 14 to 8 in the Central Division opener of the Midwest Baseball League played Wednesday in Hamiota. Pitchers Mac Coupe Randy Robertson and Harvey Shindru shared the win. Teammates included Don Thiessen Brent Desiatnyk Curtis Bell Lindsay Bridge Carl Caldwell Jeff Robertson Scott McWhirter and Darrin Meakin. Next home game set for June 14 at 7:00 p.m.

Manitoba Parks Seek Public Feedback on Services

Tourism minister Bob Banman announced Operation Feedback to measure public satisfaction with Manitoba parks. A rating card given to every tenth vehicle or camper group collects service ratings and comments. Results are analyzed biweekly to guide improvements under the policy that parks are for people.

Winter Games Groups Honored at Reception

Lieutenant Governor F L Jobin praised Manitoba Winter Games committees volunteers and sport associations at a May 26 reception at Government House Winnipeg. Host Dauphin region regional committees and 10 sport governing bodies received lucite plaques for leadership in the 1979 Games. Westman won the finals amid a corrected countback, Pembina Valley second, Central Plains named most improved region.

Provincial Hi-Lites Concerts At Brandon In 1978

The Provincial Hi-Lites Concerts will be held in Brandon at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium on June 10 1978 at 2 30 pm and 7 30 pm. The event features Manitoba's 35 arts festivals with 17 performers per show and culminates with six finalists bound for the 1978 National Festival in Toronto. Approximately 700 performers from across the province will participate. Sponsored by Manitoba Arts Council Department of Tourism Affairs The Eaton Foundation and Mrs James A Richardson Foundation. Congratulations to The Oakburn Dancers selected to represent the Birdtail River Festival with runners up Lorrie Tutkaluke Perry Bomak Nancy Dixon David Gadd and Julie McConnell.
