Saving the Jets Taxpayers clash over Winnipeg arena plan
Manitoba politics reach a fever pitch as Izzy Asper funds a private endowment to subsidize the Winnipeg Jets arena. Premier Gary Filmon faces caucus opposition and mounting costs, with taxpayers on the hook for $700 000 yearly maintenance and a promised downtown project ballooning toward $37 million and beyond. A Forum Group proposal to demolish and rebuild elsewhere with private financing offers a taxpayer friendly, phased option that preserves Blue Bombers subsidies. Citizens urged to call officials and pressure an election deadline.
