Health Minister Bud Sherman announced Manitoba hospitals may raise semi private room charges by 12.5 percent effective June 1. The daily rate rises to 13.50 from 12.00, following MHSC board recommendations to cover rising operating costs.
The Manitoba government on an interim basis reduced interest on all Critical Home Repair Program loans to a maximum of 14.5 percent. The change follows a 18.25 percent rate as of March 16, 1961, with existing loans under 14.5 percent remaining unchanged for now. The move uses a five year fixed rate offered by the provincial Department of Finance to crown corporations and agencies, aimed at aiding seniors and low income families in necessary home repairs.
Charles Mayer MP for Portage Marquett e presses five recommendations to ease farmers burden as interest rates peak. Proposes extending the Small Business Development Bond to farms, raising the Wheat Board initial payment, speeding Agricultural Stabilization Act payments, fixing financing for livestock, and adding two MPs to the Bank of Canada board.
The Ladies Auxiliary held its May 22 gathering with 14 districts present. Presiding was Mrs. Ruth McConnell. Tea receipts totaled 400.15 for Bake, 221.05 for Tea Tables, 33.25 for Shovel raffle, and 700.00 from the doll raffle. Proceeds tag to a designated use in the new structure. Attendance at Spring tea reached 248.
Ottawa reports Senator Hazen Argue announces a long term grains deal with Boris Gordeev of the Soviet Union. The pact commits Canada to at least 2 million tonnes of wheat and feed grains to the USSR over five years from Aug 1, 1981 to July 31, 1986.
The April 29 directive urges completing final studies on the Western Power Grid linking Manitoba Saskatchewan and Alberta. Feasibility work on transmission sites and electricity sales between the three provinces is finished and under ministerial negotiation. The plan aims to secure electricity supply, foster self sufficiency through fossil fuel use, and prove gains from western provincial cooperation.
The Treble Teens of Steinbach will sing at 3 30 p.m. June 27 during the Masonic Memorial Auditorium dedication at the International Peace Garden. Other acts include SAC Con cert Band Winnipeg Brass and The Duluth Accordionaires. Proceeds aid the International Peace Garden.
