Wheat Pioneer McMurahhy Dies at 82
Malcolm J. S. McMurahhy of McConnell Manitoba who discovered the strain leading to the rust resistant Selkirk wheat variety died in hospital at 82. The Selkirk development began when he found a two headed rust free plant on his Strathclair farm after a Garnet vanity wheat harvest. He later sent samples to the federal cereals division and Selkirk was licensed in 1953 with government recognition in 1954 including a $10 000 annuity. He is survived by his wife three sons and a daughter and a son killed in France in 1944. Funeral held May 28 at Harmota United Church.

Explorer Graduation Service Closes Year With Skits and piano Solo
The Explorer Graduation was held in the church May 24 at 7 30 with 29 members and 3 leaders present. Mothers attended. President Janice English presided and plans for a Rally at Binscarth on May 28 were made. A hike in June was decided. Girls performed The Highway of Happiness and Kathy Rampling read Can Money Talk. Linda Duncan sang and Mary Clark played piano. Marjone Pedlow led the service and Maur een McConnell and Barbara McLaren welcomed the girls into C G I T. Third year grads included Janice English Audrey Brooks Sheila Dale Shirley Kirk Linda Kirk Joan McNiven Lynne Coupland Kathy Rampling. Games and lunch ended a very enjoyable meeting and the girls thanked their leaders Mrs Caldwell Miss Fulton and Marjone Pedlow.

Fraternal Hall Planned for Hamiota
At a May 25 meeting in the Community Room a group of six local lodges intends to form an organization empowered to buy the Orange Hall. Plans include dismantling part of the hall and renovating it into a one story Lodge Room for multiple groups. Six organizations including Masons Eastern Star Foresters Odd Fellows Orangemen and Rebekahs back the project with money and labor. Committees will work out details and work begins immediately.

Mission Band Meet Deliberates On Alcohol Use
The Mission Band gathered on May 25 at Mrs. Hudson’s home. Members debated if alcohol is inherently good or bad and reached a verdict that it depends on usage. They sent $5 to refugees via C.G.I.T. and thanked Sharon Coupland Irene Kirk Eva Baxter and Gloria Allan for help. Donations and sponge sales raised funds.

The 1960 Mid Western League All Star game will be played at Kenton Ball Park on Sunday June 5 at 2 p.m. South team players come from Virden Oak Lake Rivers and Kenton while the north teams include Hamiota Crandall Isabella and Oak River. Proceeds go to the injured player fund.

Children’s Aid Society Reports Strong Year in Brandon
The Children’s Aid Society celebrated a successful year with over 2000 children and families served. At the Knox United Church banquet in Brandon, Mrs. H C Riesberry highlighted the agency’s role in welfare and growth. Treasurer G Flay reported 1959 60 costs at 186796 deficit 6208. Board elected 50 directors and S W K Stevenson named president.
