Hamiota Lions Club backs reading aid for blind resident

Hamiota Manitoba Lions Club raises funds for a reading machine and monitor for Mrs. Darlene Smith who is certifiably blind. Donations and events total about 4000, with 1800 from Lions Telethon and 1000 from Hospital Staff Fund. The 30th year marks Lions Don Mennie as District Governor 5M13.

Manitoba Unemployment Rate Drops in June 1986

Manitoba posts the lowest actual unemployment rate in Canada for June 1986 at 6.4 percent unadjusted for seasonality, down from 7.8 percent a year earlier, with 16 000 more employed (502 000 total) and 6 000 fewer unemployed. Youth unemployment falls to 10.7 percent, women’s rate to 6 percent, while Ontario stands at 6.5 percent.

Bride elect honoured in Chumah Hall shower

A July 26 1986 shower in Chumah Hall honored Gayle Brown the bride elect for August 16. Guests pinned corsages and led her to a chair. Music was provided by Kim Mathison and Mary Cochran with Jim Mathison. Gifts were presented by Travis Brown and Ginger Fleury. Lunch followed.

Cochran Sails to World Championship Basketball Win

Beth Cochran stars for Canada as the National Team wins the Women’s World Championship Preview in Hamilton Toronto and St Catherine’s. They defeat USA Korea and Germany and clinch the tournament with a playoff win then beat the USA in an exhibition. Bruce and Mary Cochran attend. After a 10 day break the team heads to Moscow before Spain exhibition dates. Beth returns to Winnipeg for her fifth year with the Lady Weamen.
