Annual Fair in Hamiota Bravely Pressed by Rain

The 1970 Hamiota Fair faced poor weather yet the directors and staff delivered a successful event. About 600 attendees enjoyed a pancake breakfast as Jim and Vi Emerson provided organ music. Livestock judging proceeded with resilience. prizes went to Isabella W.I. Float, George Crighton, and the Hamiota Pioneer Club.

Countdown to a Championship Pan Am Playdowns select Western Manitoba host team

The Kinsmen Club of Brandon sponsors the Pan Am Playdowns for the 1970 Canadian Senior championships set for August 28 in Brandon Hamiota and Souris. Ten teams compete with Manitoba receiving an extra host slot. Transcona Bisons already named while the Manitoba Sovier Baseball League team will be assembled. Manager Lloyd Horn discusses early picks including catchers Ralph Gardiner and Cliff Seafoot and infielders Greg Cameron Bill Chapple and Lynn Caldwell with two outfielders and two pitchers chosen. more details to come in later writings.

Birdtail River School Board Meeting Minutes July 23 1970

The Birdtail River School Division No. 38 held a board meeting at Crandall on July 23 1970 at 8 pm. Trustees listed included Fulton Waddell Rapley Randell Butcher Lewycky Falloon Armitage Hyndman. Motions approved minutes of July 9 1970 and routine correspondence and superintendent report. Advances authorized to E & E Janitorial and progress payment to Hoffman Construction for Birtle Collegiate addition. Maintenance equipment purchased from Marlin Bros. Letter of congratulations sent to Diane McLean for track and field success in Winnipeg. Meeting adjourned for August 6 1970 at 8 pm.

Rain Delays Pioneer Club Parade in Hamiota

After a July 23 shower the Pioneer Club parade activity began at the elementary school grounds with about 65 floats and displays. Antique cars decorated bicycles and Hamiota Horse Club members in costumes joined Doug Beamish with a threshing outfit and George Crighton with oxen as the parade moved through town to Centennial Park for the 78th annual Hamiota Agriculture Society Fair.

Workshop Planned at Hamiota Collegiate Institute

The Manitoba Theatre Centre sends six top students to rural Manitoba in August to conduct Creative Drama workshops for children and adults. At Hamiota Collegiate Institute Auditorium on August 11 at 2 p.m. a children’s drama class and at 8 p.m. an adults class will be held.

Cass Beggs' Term As Hydro Head Extended

Manitoba Hydro chair Cass Beggs receives a two year extension by order in council after initially joining as chair and hydro consultant on December 16 1970 on a six month basis. Finance Minister Saul Cherniak notes his intimate knowledge of sites and plans for power in the province and confirms the continuation at 35000 dollars yearly.
