Local 76th Annual Fair in Hamiota a Big Success

More than 400 people started with a pancake breakfast as Hamiota held its 76th annual fair. Participants enjoyed a parade with floats antique cars and bands followed by a busy program of exhibits animal shows horse events and evening games and a street dance.

Draw Winners Announced for Hamiota Lions Draw

The Hamiota Lions Club named winners Terry McLaren for 50 dollars Harold McLaren for 100 dollars and Keith Sunley for 150 dollars. Proceeds benefit the Hamiota District Hospital Ambulance Fund.

Regular meeting notes outline a 1971 budget with 9.8 percent spending rise and a $7.41 per student increase. Despite higher costs, the board cut the special tax by 2.96 mills aided by a 1970 surplus and government grants.

Health Unit Meet in Virden August 9 Executive Session

The Virden Health Unit met July 19 in the Junior High Auditorium with 35 in attendance. W. C. White of Rivers chaired. Dr. Fryer read minutes and the June Nursing report. The group noted bed costs at Manitoba hospitals and observed a moment of silence for former member B. Ackroyd.

Marney Memorial Plaque Unveiled At Rural Cemetery

A July 18 ceremony at Marney cemetery unveiled a memorial plaque honoring early pioneers who built the church and schools. Dr H J Harland served as MC as Mrs Ray Armstrong and Mr Stan Fortune unveiled the plaque. Families and former teachers attended from towns including Winnipeg, Brandon, Neepawa, and Swan River.
