Sunflower beetle infestations rising with larval presence noted

Reports show increasing sunflower beetle activity over the past week. Adults lay eggs while larvae appear in many areas. scouting is advised before control. Larvae are yellow green 2-5 mm, up to 8 mm when grown. An X pattern with at least 10 random plant checks helps assess populations. 10-15 larvae per plant warrants treatment with Furadan Decis Guthion or Thiodan. Spruce budworm moths are seen on spruce, eggs hatch in about 10 days, overwinter as larvae, and next spring sprays are needed when feeding begins on new growth.
