Brandon jail inmates gift equipment to hospital in Brandon

Brandon General Hospital receives about 1200 worth pediatric ward equipment donated by Brandon Correctional Institution residents from the welfare fund. A crib dome a playpen and two mounting poles were bought after hospital suggestions. Minister Muriel Smith called it a generous community gesture reflecting residents compassion and responsibility. Superintendent Jim MacDonald noted high community involvement by residents and the program’s role in building self esteem and ties to Brandon.

Hamiota Centennial Committee Plans Ecumenical Service

HAMIOTA The Centennial Committee met July 10 with chairman Sid Lewis presiding Rev H Lynas reported plans for an Ecumenical Service July 22 featuring three local ministers from United Anglican and Pentecostal churches and a 50 to 60 voice mass choir. Lawn chairs requested. Oakner to sell 75th Church Anniversary place mats during Community Center registration. Weather permitting Indian Dance Band outdoors July 18 at Hamiota Elementary. Bus to transport seniors between the Community Center and Fair Grounds. Registration signs placed at locations. Horse shoe pits completed for July 21 tournament at Fair Grounds. more female contestants needed.

Legion centennial dedication day service held

HAMIOTA legion marks centennial with a Sunday July 8 ceremony led by RCMP Constable Brian Cronkite and parade from the clinic lot to the Cenotaph. Harvey Pollock was parade marshal. Rev. Ralph Clark and Rev. H. Lynas spoke. Wreaths placed, Last Post and Rivelle played, choirs sang, lunch served at the Community Center.

Old age security pensions rise in July

Ottawa announces increases to Old Age Security GIS and Spouse's Allowance effective July. OAS rises to 269.74 monthly. GIS for singles up to 295.81 with a two stage 50 increase. spouse and surviving spouse allowances also rise. Benefits adjusted quarterly per CPI with new eligibility implications for GIS.

Three United Church ministers and one lay person seek election to Moderator at the 30th General Council in Morden Manitoba August 6 17 The current Moderator Clarke MacDonald will step down on August 9 and be addressed as The Very Rev The election will be conducted by 371 elected commissioners from across Canada to set policies and goals for Canada’s largest Protestant denomination
